I recently spoke with Pastor Chris Dorrity of The Branch Church about principles for biblical church growth. With decades of experience launching churches, Chris offered great insights.
He highlighted Paul’s mentorship of Timothy in 2 Timothy 4, noting effective ministry combines the wisdom of seasoned believers with the passion of emerging leaders. Surrounding ourselves with godly counsel is key.
Many modern churches pursue growth by telling people what they want to hear. But Paul urged Timothy to preach truth even when it’s hard for listeners. Biblical growth requires rebuking sin and false teaching while also encouraging believers.
Chris emphasized the importance of listening to and connecting with church members of all ages and backgrounds. People want to feel seen, heard and valued. By understanding differing perspectives, leaders can unify groups around the vision of reaching others for Christ.
He shared an example of renovating their century-old sanctuary by first listening to needs, then creating a solution that met the desires of all generations. Listening preceded good decision-making.
Vital church growth reaches inwardly and outwardly. We must create belonging within the congregation while also showing unbelievers radical love. Making connections with visitors demonstrates Christ-like care.
Growth requires translating doctrinal beliefs into practical action. It’s insufficient to simply preach truth if it doesn’t transform how we live. The Word must take flesh through authentic community and compassion.
May God raise up more leaders like Pastor Chris who listen closely, foster genuine connections, contextualize timeless truth, and inspire God’s people to live out their faith. This kind of Spirit-led, Bible-centered ministry will further Kingdom growth for generations to come.
